Will Ross McCausland Be The Next To Breakthrough At Rangers?

When talk comes around of youngsters getting game time for Rangers, Ross McCausland wasn’t one of the ones at the top of list. Fans have been clamouring for the likes of Bailey Rice, Leon King and Zak Lovelace to get more game time. McCausland though, has come off of the bench the last two games and impressed.

The 20-year-old Northern Irishman has played on the right wing and been confident and creative. He’s played with no fear and made a difference each time he’s come on.

He immediately created a chance on Thursday minutes after replacing Scott Wright. Then yesterday after replacing the injured Zak Lovelace, again, looked to create for team mates.

Getting the nod to come on over Sam Lammers against St. Mirren was a huge vote of confidence for the youngster. He deserved it though, he was fearless away in Cyprus and Rangers need more players like that on the pitch.

His contract expires next summer, can you see his game time continuing and his contract being renewed?

Ross McCausland vs Aris Limassol

The young winger only came on in the 85th minute on Thursday. However, in that time he showed what he could provide this team. He didn’t hide, he was always available to receive the ball and looked to be positive on it.

He slipped a lovely pass inside the centre back and full back but the cut back from Tavernier couldn’t find a Rangers player.

It’s not hyperbole to say that he offered more in 5-10 minutes than Scott Wright did the rest of the game. This positive cameo probably paved the way to his game time on Sunday also.

Ross McCausland vs St. Mirren

The Northern Ireland U21 international got more than a full half yesterday. Unfortunately it was at the expense of the injured Zak Lovelace.

That being said, again, he was positive with the ball and always looked to make runs in behind the defence. He should’ve had an assist after a brilliant flicked back header fell to Raskin inside the box but he lacked the composure to finish off the chance.

These were his numbers from the match;

  • 49 Minutes Played
  • 88% Pass Accuracy
  • 3 Chances Created (most in the match)
  • 1 Big Chance Created
  • 100% Tackles Won (1/1)
  • 50% Ground Duels Won (1/2)
  • 3 Recoveries

McCausland has been a shining light over a dull period for Rangers in the last week. His positivity and creativity have been a massive plus over the last two games.

How have you rated his last two appearances?

Conclusion

With a new manager due in, in the coming weeks its unclear how the team will look. If they are looking to use wingers though, McCausland should definitely be considered as an option.

How impressed have you been with the 20-year-old? Are you hopeful that the new manager gives more youth players a chance?

For me, I hope these two appearances weren’t the last we’ll see of Ross McCausland this season.
