Who’s on Rangers Radar: Josh Maja

A striker who has been linked with Rangers for months now, Maja was asked in an interview over the weekend regarding Rangers interest. He stated he was only focusing on here and now with Bordeaux. The question came at a strange time as his name hasn’t been mentioned in the media since January. So, who is he?

Name – Josh Maja

Age – 24

Nationality – Nigerian

Position – Striker

Club – Bordeaux

Maja was touted for huge things when Bordeaux paid a reported £1.5m to Sunderland when he was nineteen. He had a loan spell at Fulham in the EPL and Stoke in the Championship. His best numbers have been at Bordeaux though.

He had the chance to leave the French club when they were relegated but decided to stay loyal and try and help them get back to Ligue 1 where they belong. These are his numbers this season;

  • 34 Appearances (31 Starts)
  • 16G/6A
  • 160mins Per Goal
  • 24% Goal Conversion Rate
  • 7/7 Penalties Scored
  • 1.2 Key Passes Per Game

The goal conversion rate is excellent and shows his level of finishing ability. Bordeaux don’t create a lot of chances for him which makes his goals scored all the more impressive.

A very mobile and technically gifted striker, he’s a nuisance for defenders with his constant movement. He picks up good positions inside the box and which leads to him picking up second chance goals.

He also links up the play superbly which is why his assist numbers are high for a striker. He holds the ball really well and more often than not picks the right pass to either send someone through or play a one-two to get himself a chance.

A very clever forward with great finishing ability and a knack of being in the right place at the right time. He’s exactly the type of striker Rangers need for next season.

24 year olds of this calibre available for free don’t come around every transfer window. This would be a smart business move as Maja still has plenty of time to hit the potential expected of him as a teenager.

Would this be a signing that excites you? Are there any strikers you want the club to go for?
