If the rumours are to be believed, Dujon Sterling, Jack Butland and Jose Cifuentes will all be joining Kieran Dowell as Rangers signings soon. That’ll be four players in the door with less than £1m spent, so where should the money be spent?
Another goalkeeper.
This option seems very unlikely as Butland would be the number one if he arrives and McCrorie is more than capable as back up. If Butland arrives it will be to be first choice, he’s not turned that Manchester United pay day to be second choice at Rangers.
Full backs.
If Sterling arrives he can play both full back positions and left back is already covered with Ridvan and Barisic. Adam Devine hasn’t been seen much, but when he has he’s been a capable deputy for Tavernier.
I would love to see Rangers go for Max Johnston from Motherwell with his contract up next month. He scored the winner in what is widely assumed as his last game for the club yesterday.
Centre backs.
Auston Trusty and Jonathan Panzo were two names linked to the club in the last couple of months. Trusty has been the most recent link and would apparently cost around £2m.
Nothing has been heard since the links first arose but this would be a relatively cheap outlaw for a player with an excellent profile.
The money spent on centre backs will depend on two things;
1. Does Ben Davies get sold?
2. Does Michael Beale rate Leon King enough for him to be the fourth choice centre back?
It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
Central midfielders.
With Cifuentes coming in for a fee believed to be around £500k and Ryan Jack signing a new deal, Rangers have plenty of options in this area. Kieran Dowell can even drop deeper to play in the middle so any huge outlay on one of the teams stronger areas seems unlikely.
This is perhaps why the club haven’t been linked with many players in this position. If Cifuentes comes through the door, the Rangers midfield for next season is very exciting.
Wingers.
This is an area I fully believe Rangers could spend some decent money. The main winger who has been linked on and off recently is Honduran international Luis Palma.
Reports from Greece suggest he would cost around £4.5m which would be a significant outlay for Rangers this summer. The club need players to get the similar numbers to what Sakala brings and those players come at a price.
Luis Palma is a player of great promise and would be a very interesting signing for Rangers.
Strikers.
This is where everyone wants the majority of the money to be spent, right? With Bordeaux not gaining promotion, long time Rangers target Josh Maja is available for free. He would be an excellent pick up and would leave fund to splash out on another striker.
Ike Ugbo, the ex-Chelsea youth striker now of Troyes was linked over the weekend. He’s had a tough season and could be looking for a fresh start with a familiar face in Michael Beale.
One of the most recent links has been Tasos Douvikas from FC Utrecht. He’s recently just won the Eredivise golden boot and Rangers have been linked with going toe to toe with Celtic for the Greek international.
Other rumoured targets in January were Nikola Krstovic and Petar Ratkov. Krstovic signed a new deal with DAC after January and it’s believed he would cost £5m+. Ratkov has been subject of rejected bids of up to £2.5m so he’s another that wouldn’t be cheap.
Both players have excellent profiles which would fit the club philosophy so it will be interesting to see if Rangers make a move.
Where would you spend the money? Are there any names in particular you want to see come in?
