According to reports in The Scottish Sun, Rangers have made Cyriel Dessers their top striker target. The article suggests Rangers have had a seven-figure bid rejected. Cremonese seem to be keen to make as much of £6m they spent on him back. Although, with the clubs relegation to Serie B they may not be able to play hardball for long.
The 28-year-old Nigerian international had a decent season considering his clubs struggles. He was the top scorer in 21/22 Europa Conference League as he helped steer Feyenord to the final. He has experience in the top leagues of Belgium, The Netherlands and now Italy, along with his European experience. He’s been very highly thought of everywhere he’s been and could be an excellent signing for the ‘Gers.
The Numbers
Dessers was the man Cremonese were hoping would help them steer clear of relegation. Unfortunately, that wasn’t to be the case as the club could only score thirty-six goals the entire season. However, it doesn’t seem fair to place the blame for this on the Nigerian. These were his numbers;
- 26 Appearances (19 Starts)
- 6 Goals
- 265mins Per Goal
- 12% Goal Conversion
- 2 Assists
- 0.9 Key Passes Per Game
Considering the quality jump from the Eredivise to Serie A, he had an ok season. The team struggled with creating chances in general, something that wouldn’t be an issue at Rangers. Any striker that can get six goals in Serie A, could definitely make it in the SPFL.
His most impressive performance were in the UEL at Feyenord in the 21/22 season;
- 13 Appearances (7 Starts)
- 10 Goals
- 77mins Per Goal
- 36% Goal Conversion
- 1 Assist
- 0.8 Key Passes Per Game
Eleven goal contributions in thirteen appearances, in Europe, is incredible. As a result of that, he finished as the competitions top goal scorer and was named in the Team of the Tournament.
Playstyle
There is very much an Alfredo Morelos like style to Desser’s play. He uses his body excellently, like the Colombian did, in order to turn defenders and get through on goal. There are actually a few similarities between both players. The Nigerian also loves to get stuck in and presses high forcing defenders into mistakes. The reality, though, is that Cyriel Dessers is much more accomplished technically.
When it comes to converting chances, he’s equally as comfortable on either foot. His technical ability and confidence means that he scores a lot of first time finishes. Whichever foot the ball falls on he’ll take the chance, a very natural finisher within the box.
That isn’t all he has in his locker though, his excellent first touch allows him to break away from his marker and drive forward. There’s also something to be said about his ability on the ball, he’s very comfortable taking on defenders and regularly gets past them.
An all-round striker with the finishing ability Colak gives alongside the physical side Morelos did. This is a signing I would be really excited about, price dependant. A proven goal scorer in Europe and everywhere he’s been, Cyriel Dessers could be the first Rangers striker to reach twenty SPFL goals in years.
What’s Next For Dessers And Rangers
Rangers need a new go-to striker and it seems like the Nigerian international is Michael Beale’s number one target. Although the club were strongly linked to Ike Ugbo last week, this has been the first report of a bid being made for a striker. Rangers haven’t currently met Cremonese’s valuation but it seems like that negotiations will continue.
The priority of this window has to be to get a new number nine that can provide goals in the SPFL and Europe. Dessers has shown he can do it on the European stage and with his domestic experience I don’t believe he would struggle in Scotland.
How do you feel about the prospect of Cyriel Dessers arriving at Ibrox?
