Renew or Release: Scott Arfield

Scott Arfield has given a lot to Rangers and given the fans plenty of moments to remember but his contract is up this summer, will he get another years renewal?

Many fans didn’t expect/want his contract to be renewed last season so presumably the general consensus is the same this time round with him being a year older. He would turn thirty-five during the next season and with an expected bumper refresh of the squad coming in the summer he could be one shown the exit door.

He is a solid impact player off of the bench but every time he’s impressed he’s earned a start in the following game and then been disappointing. He is definitely not a player Rangers can rely on for 90 minutes anymore so is his impact off the bench enough to warrant a new deal?

Let’s look at his stats so far in the SPFL this season;

  • 24 Appearances (7 Starts)
  • 4G/1A
  • 80% Pass Accuracy
  • 0.6 Key Passes Per Game
  • 0.6 Tackles Per Game
  • 34% Total Duels Won

Not overly impressive are they? His biggest asset is his ability to arrive into the box at the right time and that’s where he gets most of his goals. Let’s not forget that Rangers would be twelve points behind if it wasn’t for his heroics at Pittodrie. The stats show that he’s a defensive liability and 34% of total duels won is incredibly poor, Rangers can’t afford to be a man down in midfield, especially when his passing is also only accurate 80% of the time.

If a refresh is coming then some of the older heads need to go to make room for some freshness to be added. How do you feel about Scott Arfield this season? Would you give him a new deal or are you happy for the club to call time on his spell at Ibrox?
