Rabbi Matondo: Time to Shine?

With doubt surrounding Ryan Kent’s future is it time that Rabbi Matondo comes in and gets some much needed game time? The Welsh winger looked bright against St. Mirren in his 30 minute cameo and picked up a deserved assist.

What Matondo can provide is directness and a ridiculous amount of pace. He’s struggled getting regular minutes due to injury and falling out of favour but considering the outlay on the player Rangers surely owe it to themselves, and Matondo, to let him show what he can do.

In the limited time on the pitch he’s still managed to get four assists which has equated to a goal contribution every 150 minutes. For comparison, in the SPFL this season, Ryan Kent is currently 220 minutes per goal contribution.

Let’s look at his performance against St.Mirren;

  • 28 Minutes
  • 1 Assist
  • 86% Pass Accuracy
  • 67% Dribble Success (2/3)
  • 67% Ground Duels Won (4/6)
  • Was Fouled Twice

Considering his last appearance in the SPFL was almost four months ago this was an impressive cameo. He showed glimpses of what he can provide the team going forward.

Dangerous on the break with electric pace and always willing to try and get in behind he offers something completely different to Kent. The willingness to get to the byline and get the ball into the box is where he got the assist at the weekend, something Kent rarely tries to do now as he prefers to cut inside.

Many fans forget that he is also only 22 and still has a lack of experience at the top level (sorry Pro League fans). He’s four years younger than Kent and has obviously has longer left on his deal, he could be the answer on the left hand side.

Would you start Matondo against Aberdeen or would you put Kent straight back into the team?
