There’s been a lot of talk on Rangers targeting left sided centre backs this summer. Will they be brought in to be first choice? Should John Souttar be displaced just because he’s not left footed? The answer, for me, is no.
The 26-year-old Scotland international was brilliant towards the end of last season. Next to Connor Goldson they were incredible. Which, to me, begs the question, would Panzo/Trusty/Cresswell come in and take Souttar’s place? Or would they be brought in as another option in the position?
John Souttar Last Season
As I previously mentioned, I was incredibly impressed by him last season. Minus one error at Parkhead, he was superb. His ability on the ball was a massive surprise for me. He’s extremely confident bringing it out and stepping into the midfield. His SPFL numbers demonstrate that;
- 12 Appearances (8 Starts)
- 1 Goal
- 87% Pass Accuracy
- 54% Long Pass Accuracy (3 Per Game)
- 76% Total Duels Won
- 80% Ground Duels Won
- 74% Aerial Duels Won (3.3 Per Game)
The defensive numbers are monstrous. How could you even consider dropping someone who’s that dominant in duels? The numbers match the eye test, fans were quick to heap praise on Souttar upon his return.
His strength in the air and in the tackle, coupled with his on the ball ability make him an excellent modern day centre back. Exactly the type that Rangers need.
I’m not suggesting the club doesn’t need reinforcements but I really hope any additions don’t mean that Souttar ships to the bench.

The RTV Interview
Souttar spoke to Rangers TV yesterday and had this to say;
For me it is the first time in a couple of years I will have had a proper pre-season where I am feeling fit and feeling 100 percent.
It gives you a base for the rest of the season, you are not catching up with the lads or feeling like you are behind, you are right on it so this next week or two will give me a great base to hopefully have an injury-free season, so I am looking forward to it.
John Souttar to RTV
For me, these are encouraging words. If the end of last season wasn’t Souttar at 100%, I can’t wait to see what he’s like after a full pre-season. He deserves a run of good luck.
He’s a quality player that Rangers got for free and I genuinely believe, without the injury issues, he could be playing in the EPL like his brother did last season.
Let’s hope the injury issues are behind him. The only negative I ever see about him is because of injury concerns. You can’t doubt his ability. It’s clear to see what he’s capable of and hopefully fans can see more this upcoming season.
Conclusion
No matter who Rangers bring in, in this window, a fit John Souttar always starts for me. Goldson and Souttar would be my first choice pairing. As I previously mentioned, I really hope any signings don’t push him down the pecking order.
He’s shown what he can do and deserves to keep his place. What’s your opinion on John Souttar? Would you like to see him remain in the side?
Do you think left sided centre backs need to be left footed? Time will tell but I hope come the first SPFL game of the season, John Souttar is starting.
