James Tavernier to Reunite With Steven Gerrard?

What started as a seemingly ridiculous rumour may actually have some substance. Graeme Bailey of 90min Football claims a deal for James Tavernier could be getting looked in to.

How Realistic is This Move?

The article states;

New Al Ettifaq manager Steven Gerrard is interested in reuniting with Rangers captain James Tavernier, who is also interesting a number of other Saudi Pro League clubs.

Graeme Bailey, 90min Football

Steven Gerrard was only appointed manager on Monday and he’s looking to make some quick moves. The Rangers captain was a favourite of Steven Gerrard’s with the two having an excellent relationship.

Not many right backs can provide 27 goal contributions in 38 appearances. The Englishmen also barely misses a game. Taking those facts into consideration it’s no wonder there’s interest in him.

There has been no talk of any fees thus far. I would imagine Rangers would be looking to maximising any incoming transfer fee for their captain and top SPFL goal scorer though.

After Gerrard’s departure from Ibrox, he had this to say;

We’ve achieved so much together. As a team we have grown, demanded more from one another but most importantly we’ve developed into better players and better people.The club is in a better place, of that I have no doubt.

The cherished moments will be forever special – bringing home 55.

It’s clear the two had a really strong bond. Is that bond strong enough to temp Tavernier to Saudi Arabia?

Conclusion

Even taking away the penalties, it would still be difficult for Rangers to replace the goal contributions the captain provides. His numbers have been ridiculous for years and they obviously haven’t gone unnoticed.

On the other hand, he’s turning 32 this season. A physical decline is inevitable at this stage of his career. If Rangers turned down bids now, would they ever get others? Probably not.

It all comes down to whether you would be happy with him retiring at the club or not. If a decent offer comes in, would you want Rangers to take it? Or do you want why James Tavernier to finish his career at Ibrox?

It will be interesting to see if there’s any further developments in the coming days.
