Ianis Hagi: Should Rangers Keep or Sell?

Reports surfaced yesterday that Celta Vigo were tracking Ianis Hagi with a view to submitting a £3m bid for him in the summer. The Romanian attacking midfielder has struggled for game time since his return from injury and has yet to start a league match under Michael Beale.

At his best he is a creative force and a technically gifted player capable of game winning moments. You only have to think back to the dramatic comeback against Braga to see that. That side of him hasn’t really been seen much since the 20/21 season in which he was crucial in helping Rangers secure their 55th SPFL title.

An on form Ianis Hagi provides numbers like these;

  • 33 Appearances (23 Starts)
  • 7G/11A
  • 108mins Per Goal Contribution
  • 1 Key Pass Per Game
  • 46% Dribble Success

Eighteen goal contributions for the 20/21 SPFL season was a magnificent return. He switched between playing out on the right and centrally this season and was unplayable at times. His ability to not only create space for himself but also his team mates by driving through defences is something not many players were offering at the time.

Just a season after though and before his injury his SPFL form had taken a dip;

  • 15 Appearances (15 Starts)
  • 2 goals
  • 580mins Per Goal Contribution

Then unfortunately the injury happened which kept him out for around 12 months. An injury this serious is bound to impact any player, especially their explosiveness, which isn’t something he could really afford to lose.

At this point it’s still unclear how big an impact the injury has had on him due to lack of game time. If he gets some starts towards the end of the season fans will be able to see a true reflection of how the injury lay off has affected his game.

With Rangers looking to overhaul the squad this summer, there’s a chance some sellable assets will be allowed to leave to bring in more money for the rebuild.

Is Ianis Hagi a player you would like to see go if £3m was offered? Or would you keep him and get him back in the squad next season?
