Homegrown: Josh Campbell

It’s no secret that the Rangers midfield is needing a refresh and with Jack, Davis and Arfield all out of contract in the summer , reinforcements are needed. Could Josh Campbell be a solution? The midfielder has impressed for Hibs this season and the numbers back it up. He could bring some much needed youth to an aging Rangers midfield with the bonus being that he’s Scottish.

So who is he?

Name – Josh Campbell

Age – 22

Nationality – Scottish

Position – Centre Mid

Club – Hibs

Capable of playing as a number eight or ten, he provides energy and tenacity along with being technically sound.

So far this season in twenty-eight SPFL appearances he has scored eight and provided four assists. Over the season he’s currently averaging a goal contribution every other game, a huge improvement from the previous season when he only managed four goal contributions in twenty-six games.

He is performing way above expectation this season as his xG is 4.39 and his xA is 1.78, so his expected goal contributions is just over six and he has twelve so far, very impressive.

Passing wise he currently averages 82% successful passes within his own half but only 69% in the opposition half. Many factors come into this, such as quality of team mate and decision making. He averages 0.8 key passes per game but continually attempts through passes to create chances for his team mates. The attempts is encouraging and hopefully the percentages would increase in a more dominant team.

For a forward thinking midfielder his tackling and duel numbers are very decent. 1.2 tackles per game, 0.7 interceptions and 0.8 times winning position on the final third. He also wins 50% of his ground duels per game and 48% of aerial duels.

A midfielder capable of contributing all over the pitch, while not the finished article he still has many years to grow so getting him in now could be key to his development.

It’s unclear the type of fee Hibs would demand for Campbell but he’s a player definitely worth enquiring about this summer.

What do you think of him? Is he a player Rangers should be taking a closer look at?
