Homegrown: Connor Barron

After not going for Lewis Ferguson and seeing the heights he’s reached, will Rangers go for the next promising midfielder to play for Aberdeen? The Scotland U21 international has impressed in his fourteen SPFL appearances this season, including two impressive games against Rangers. The young midfielder loves to get touches on the ball and get it forward and isn’t afraid to get stuck in but who is he?

Name – Connor Barron

Age – 20

Nationality – Scottish

Position – Centre-Mid

Club – Aberdeen

In fourteen appearances for Aberdeen this season he has one goal and two assists but it’s his ability to buzz around the park which is his most impressive attribute. In the games against Rangers he never seemed to tire and continually pressed to try and win the ball back.

He currently averages 1.8 tackles per game, for reference Raskin is currently averaging 2 per game. His other defensive numbers look like;

  • 3.1 Total Duels Won (55%)
  • 2.7 Ground Duels Won (62%)
  • 0.4 Aerial Duels Won (29%)

His height definitely impacts his aerial ability but as previously mentioned he likes to get stuck in and has good success rates in his tackles/duels. Teams can never have too many players willing to do the dirty work and those are the type of players that fans love.

Two assists so far this season and he is always looking to get the ball forward and create chances for the forwards. Let’s look at his passing numbers;

  • 79% Pass Accuracy Per Game
  • 84% Pass Accuracy in Own Half
  • 71% Pass Accuracy in Opposition Half
  • 49% Accurate Long Balls (1.4 Per Game)

The fact he’s attempting more passes in the opposition half backs up that he is always pushing to get the ball forward and trying to break through the defence. Long ball accuracy is something which hopefully improves with experience and players making better runs forward. These numbers would almost definitely improve playing in a more ball dominant and attacking team.

Genk were rumoured to be interested in Barron previously and a lot of players have went to Belgium recently and been sold for massive profit. He has impressed when playing against Rangers but is currently not first choice under new Aberdeen manager Barry Robson. Is now the time for Rangers to swoop in and get him on what could be a cut price deal?

How do you rate Connor Barron? Is he someone Rangers should be looking at further?
